I am very excited to offer Samadhi for Seniors, a new program that is very dear to my heart.

Here in the US, aging can be a stressful and even depressing process. Seniors are often either invisible or seen as a burgeoning market for various drugs to stave off the dreaded effects of old age. In our youth-oriented society, seniors are sometimes regarded as “dinosaurs” who are not in touch with the realities of today’s fast-paced high-tech world.

In India, growing older is viewed very differently. There, older people are venerated for their wisdom and life experience. Old age is viewed as a wonderful opportunity to fully pursue spirituality. Now that the responsibilities of the "householder stage of life" are over, seniors can fully devote themselves to spiritual growth through yoga and meditation.

Samadhi for Seniors is a program to allow seniors to engage in intense spiritual practice, with the goal of coming as close as possible to ultimate spiritual growth. We will be presenting the full array of yogic practices to our senior practitioners.

Asanas (yoga postures) modified appropriately for seniors, whether frail or active

    Pranayama (yogic breathing techniques)

    Intense meditation

    Mantra Japa (yogic chanting)

    Sound healing

    Yoga Nidra (deep conscious relaxation)

You will not need to become a Sannyasin (renunciate) or move to an Ashram, of course, as many do in India. The program will take place in a center in your own neighborhood, or in the comfort and privacy of your own home.

I hope you will join us to deepen your spiritual experience, explore the wonderful dimensions that lie within you, and connect more deeply with yourself and others.

Can't get down on the floor? Well, you don't need to! Chair Yoga adapts yoga poses to your body through creative use of a chair. The chair replaces the yoga mat and becomes an extension of your body. The student is able to warm up their body safely and practice yoga with more support and stability. Poses are done seated on the chair or the chair is used for support during standing poses and balancing. Chair Yoga is suitable for all ages, fitness levels and physical conditions and especially beneficial for people with physical limitations. This is a 1 hour class.

As we age, we often begin to develop specific physical, emotional, and spiritual issues, which can be greatly helped by yoga. At Kavannah Yoga, our philosophy is that when we reach “senior” status, we now have the opportunity to engage in a much more intensive spiritual quest. “Seniorhood” is an opportunity, not a burden! Of course, this is made more difficult as physical challenges arise. In our Yoga for Seniors class, the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of seniors will all be addressed.

A 1 hour class appropriate for those who are comfortable sitting on the floor. This slow-moving class focuses on stretching the entire body and working the muscles in a gentle manner.

As we grow older, muscles shorten, tighten and weaken. Lack of weight-bearing activity contributes to osteoporosis and lack of stretching leads to joint deterioration, arthritis and loss of flexibility. These can combine to create poor posture, back and neck pain and loss of range of motion which limit daily activity.

The mindful stretching, deep breathing and relaxation techniques learned through yoga will help increase circulation, relieve tension, improve range of motion and increase breath capacity.

Yoga classes with Sherill are gentle, slow-moving classes using safe and appropriate postures that harness the therapeutic benefits of yoga in a comfortable and nurturing environment.

Finding healing through gentle movement of the body

In this workshop we will explore gentle postures, breathing, yoga therapy, deep relaxation, meditation, chanting and writing as a way to find a practical approach to healing while deepening our understanding of living with Arthritis.

Gentle yoga will bring more fluidity to our bodies while stretching and strengthening. It has been found that the more we move, the more flexibility we will experience in our daily lives. While connecting the breath to the body and mind, one can find a deeper relaxation, along with lessening stress and pain.

As a group we will share our experience, find support, and explore what healing means to each of us.

Taught by YFA Instructor Sherrill Dykeman.

Caregivers are welcome.  (Seven-week series to follow)
