    Self-Paced Online YFA Level I Training

    Yoga for Arthritis Level I Training with Dr. Moonaz

    This Level I training is fully online and at your own pace. Course must be completed within a year of purchase date.

    That being said, you will still be supported by Yoga for Arthritis faculty and staff throughout your journey. The program includes recorded lectures, slides, research articles, quizzes, reflection questions, activities, and assignments. You must complete all elements of the course to receive a certificate of completion and professional CEUs. After completing this Level I training, you are qualified to teach the evidence-based Yoga for Arthritis program in your community. Also, you will be eligible to continue toward Yoga for Arthritis certification, which includes Level II mentorship & Level III training, both available online. These steps are recommended for anyone wishing to specialize in work with this population, work with private clients, or provide Yoga for Arthritis in healthcare settings. 

    Yoga for Arthritis was developed by yoga researcher and arthritis expert Steffany Moonaz, PhD, along with an interdisciplinary team, including rheumatologists, psychologists, public health researchers and yoga therapists. Combining ancient yoga practices with modern medical knowledge, this program offers modifications to address the unique abilities and limitations of persons with arthritis. In a 7-year randomized clinical trial at Johns Hopkins University, the program’s participation was associated with improved arthritis symptoms, physical fitness, psychological functioning and quality of life. Such evidence is vital for bridging the integrative yoga world with medical healthcare, making these practices more accessible to those who really need them.

    This training program trains yoga teachers to safely and effectively impart rigorously researched yoga practices, with individually-tailored modifications, to those with arthritis and related conditions. As a result of taking this Yoga for Arthritis teacher training program, participants will be able to:

    • Become familiar with the most common arthritic conditions, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, psoriatic arthritis, etc.
    • Understand joint anatomy and pathophysiology as related to arthritis in depth
    • Offer modifications for joint limitations and chronic pain
    • Teach Yoga for Arthritis classes in their communities
    • Work individually with arthritic clients of all ability levels

    Training Information: 

    This Level I training is fully online and at your own pace. Course must be completed within a year of purchase date

    The pre-course reading and digital materials are within the online course.

    After completing this Level I training, you are qualified to teach Yoga for Arthritis program. Also, you will be eligible to continue toward Yoga for Arthritis certification, which includes Level II mentorship & Level III training.

She encourages students to discover how to feel the poses and the alignment in their own bodies, how to make the practice their own, and how to integrate breathe, movement, and the meditative aspects of yoga in a healing manner.

    Diane Dunn began teaching yoga in Reno in 2016. My focus on the biomechanics of yoga began in 2013 prior to knee replacement due to arthritis I had taken yoga in various forms since 1980, but only really began to pay attention when I needed a knee replacement due to overuse and osteoarthritis. It was at this point that the work I was able to do with physical therapists and Angela Sullivan at Ascent therapy in Carson City , Nevada for the year prior to the surgery and the year after gave me the grounding for what I wanted to pass on. In 2016 I completed basic training in Yoga for the Special Child . This introduced me to Integral Yoga and adaptive yoga which I began teaching with Kathy Randolph at The Yoga Center in Reno, Nevada. I earned my 200 hour RYTC from Vira Bhava Yoga teaching training program under Amy Joytir and Kelly Gordon with Angela Sullivan as my mentor in 2017. Then I heard and saw Dr. Moonaz presenting online and I knew that was it. It was exactly what I needed to say and how I wanted to teach. From then I just can’t get enough I just keep wanting to learn more and go deeper and pass it on. I went on to specialize in Yoga for Arthritis under Dr. Stephanie Moonaz, completing Level I Yoga for Arthritis in 2017 in Boston, MA. Then mentored with Ann Swanson, whose book Science of Yoga had already been one of my Yoga bibles. I completed Level III training in 2020 with Dr. Moonaz. I was blessed to had the zoom teaching tutorial with Ann Swanson also in 2020 this really helped me when it became necessary to go online. In 2020 I began taking my classes onto zoom classes.

      Class Description: A gentle yoga class for beginners. Dana offers chair and floor versions of all the poses.

      About Teacher: 

      Dana began practicing yoga when she was pregnant with her first child nearly 30 years ago. She received a 200-hour teacher training certificate in 2012. From 2012-2017, she received certificates in LifeForce Yoga (yoga for anxiety and depression), kids yoga, restorative yoga, and Yoga for Arthritis.

      In 2019, she completed a master of science degree in yoga therapy from Maryland University of Integrative Health and 500-hour yoga teaching certification. Dana teaches both group and individual yoga and yoga therapy sessions. In addition, she works as a clinical supervisor in the Natural Care Center at the Maryland University of Integrative Health.

      After a bike accident in 2010, yoga helped her regain the ability to walk without pain. The key was using all the tools of yoga to heal. Now, she has a yoga practice that strengthens her weaker muscles, stretches her tighter muscles, and includes meditation, pranayama (breath exercises), and self-reflection. As a result, she is healthier, calmer, and virtually pain-free.​

      Class Description: Yoga for Arthritis & Chronic Pain classes use the tools of yoga to improve the health and well-being of people living with arthritis. Developed at a leading research university by an interdisciplinary team of medical and health professionals, each 60-minute class focuses on conscious, gentle movement of the joints using the breath. Poses are taught either seated or standing using chairs for support. Students are encouraged to utilize props such as bolsters, blocks and blankets to tailor the poses to his or her needs.

      Class Description: Learn yoga with Charlene!

      About Teacher: 

      Charlene Marie Muhammad is a wellness practitioner, embracing the spirit of natural living for over 25 years. Charlene’s practice is predicated on formal Master’s level training as well as her own personal use of plants, food as medicine and movement therapy, giving her hands-on relationship and knowledge of these traditional healing modalities.

      Charlene’s wellness practice, Urbanherbalist, focuses on supporting clients with a practical application to optimal health by using the healing tools that she has grown to embrace in her own personal life: herbal medicine, nutrition and yoga.

       Charlene’s journey began in her 20s around the time she completed her undergraduate work at Cornell University. Having landed a “dream” job, working for corporate America on Park Avenue in New York City, Charlene found life away from the beautiful gorges of Ithaca stressful.  Her mother suggested she take a yoga class. One year later, Charlene decided to get out of a city that has buildings so high they hide the sky, and relocated to Seattle, Washington.

       Life in Seattle brought many changes, including the birth of two sons. Charlene had the great fortune of giving birth at home with a Naturopathic doctor and midwife who taught her how to care for her budding little family using plants and nutrition.  As Charlene learn things, she began to share her new knowledge and experience with friends and family. The more she shared, the bigger her role became in the community and so the more knowledge she strived to gain.

       After years of her experiential knowledge growth, Charlene decided it was time to study traditional healing practices more formally. Charlene knew intuitively that plants and good nutrition supported optimal health, yet wanted to learn the science behind it. For her, understanding the sciences provides great clues to understanding the nuances of nature. What better way to get to know one’s self better than to study the nature of human life? Charlene also believed that this would provide her with the compassion to work with clients who are struggling with their own understanding about health and wellness.

      Currently, Charlene facilitates wellness lecture, workshops and conducts private sessions with groups and individual clients. Charlene also teaches a variety of yoga classes around the metropolitan Baltimore-Washington, DC area.

      About Teacher: 

      Posey's yoga journey started when she was 16 years old. She started yoga to remain flexible during her athletic career. As the years went on yoga became much more than just the yoga poses: it became a way of life - on and off the mat.

      Dana began practicing yoga when she was pregnant with her first child nearly 30 years ago. She received a 200-hour teacher training certificate in 2012. From 2012-2017, she received certificates in LifeForce Yoga (yoga for anxiety and depression), kids yoga, restorative yoga, and Yoga for Arthritis.

      In 2019, she completed a master of science degree in yoga therapy from Maryland University of Integrative Health and 500-hour yoga teaching certification. Dana teaches both group and individual yoga and yoga therapy sessions. In addition, she works as a clinical supervisor in the Natural Care Center at the Maryland University of Integrative Health.

      After a bike accident in 2010, yoga helped her regain the ability to walk without pain. The key was using all the tools of yoga to heal. Now, she has a yoga practice that strengthens her weaker muscles, stretches her tighter muscles, and includes meditation, pranayama (breath exercises), and self-reflection. As a result, she is healthier, calmer, and virtually pain-free.​

      About Teacher: 

      Charlene Marie Muhammad is a wellness practitioner, embracing the spirit of natural living for over 25 years. Charlene’s practice is predicated on formal Master’s level training as well as her own personal use of plants, food as medicine and movement therapy, giving her hands-on relationship and knowledge of these traditional healing modalities.

      Charlene’s wellness practice, Urbanherbalist, focuses on supporting clients with a practical application to optimal health by using the healing tools that she has grown to embrace in her own personal life: herbal medicine, nutrition and yoga.

       Charlene’s journey began in her 20s around the time she completed her undergraduate work at Cornell University. Having landed a “dream” job, working for corporate America on Park Avenue in New York City, Charlene found life away from the beautiful gorges of Ithaca stressful.  Her mother suggested she take a yoga class. One year later, Charlene decided to get out of a city that has buildings so high they hide the sky, and relocated to Seattle, Washington.

       Life in Seattle brought many changes, including the birth of two sons. Charlene had the great fortune of giving birth at home with a Naturopathic doctor and midwife who taught her how to care for her budding little family using plants and nutrition.  As Charlene learn things, she began to share her new knowledge and experience with friends and family. The more she shared, the bigger her role became in the community and so the more knowledge she strived to gain.

       After years of her experiential knowledge growth, Charlene decided it was time to study traditional healing practices more formally. Charlene knew intuitively that plants and good nutrition supported optimal health, yet wanted to learn the science behind it. For her, understanding the sciences provides great clues to understanding the nuances of nature. What better way to get to know one’s self better than to study the nature of human life? Charlene also believed that this would provide her with the compassion to work with clients who are struggling with their own understanding about health and wellness.

      Currently, Charlene facilitates wellness lecture, workshops and conducts private sessions with groups and individual clients. Charlene also teaches a variety of yoga classes around the metropolitan Baltimore-Washington, DC area.

      Class Description: Yoga for Arthritis & Chronic Pain classes use the tools of yoga to improve the health and well-being of people living with arthritis. Developed at a leading research university by an interdisciplinary team of medical and health professionals, each 60-minute class focuses on conscious, gentle movement of the joints using the breath. Poses are taught either seated or standing using chairs for support. Students are encouraged to utilize props such as bolsters, blocks and blankets to tailor the poses to his or her needs.

      Workshop Description: This workshop will help decrease the stress response in your body, elicit changes in your brain to decrease your pain experience, and improve your mobility and quality of life. This is a 6 week program offered 1x/week. 

      There are two options available: 

      • Virtual Zoom sessions of 5-10 people, 45 minutes each 
      • In Person sessions of 2-4, 60 minutes each (follows Covid protocols with masks and social distancing) 

      About Teacher: Melissa earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) from the University of Maryland Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science in 2007 and completed a Vestibular specialist course at Emory University in 2012.  In 2018, she completed her 200 hour Yoga training through Yogaworks and went on to become certified through the Love Your Brain Organization. Melissa has also completed training in 2020 through Yoga for Arthritis, a program established through research funded by the Johns Hopkins Arthritis Center.

      Class Description: Diane's classes offer a simple yoga with modifications for special needs and an emphasis on the biomechanics of yoga and the relationship of mind, body, and spirit. She encourages students to discover how to feel the poses and the alignment in their own bodies, how to make the practice their own, and how to integrate breathe, movement, and the meditative aspects of yoga in a healing manner. 

      About Teacher: 

      Diane Dunn began teaching yoga in Reno in 2016. My focus on the biomechanics of yoga began in 2013 prior to knee replacement due to arthritis I had taken yoga in various forms since 1980, but only really began to pay attention when I needed a knee replacement due to overuse and osteoarthritis. It was at this point that the work I was able to do with physical therapists and Angela Sullivan at Ascent therapy in Carson City , Nevada for the year prior to the surgery and the year after gave me the grounding for what I wanted to pass on. In 2016 I completed basic training in Yoga for the Special Child . This introduced me to Integral Yoga and adaptive yoga which I began teaching with Kathy Randolph at The Yoga Center in Reno, Nevada. I earned my 200 hour RYTC from Vira Bhava Yoga teaching training program under Amy Joytir and Kelly Gordon with Angela Sullivan as my mentor in 2017. Then I heard and saw Dr. Moonaz presenting online and I knew that was it. It was exactly what I needed to say and how I wanted to teach. From then I just can’t get enough I just keep wanting to learn more and go deeper and pass it on. I went on to specialize in Yoga for Arthritis under Dr. Stephanie Moonaz, completing Level I Yoga for Arthritis in 2017 in Boston, MA. Then mentored with Ann Swanson, whose book Science of Yoga had already been one of my Yoga bibles. I completed Level III training in 2020 with Dr. Moonaz. I was blessed to had the zoom teaching tutorial with Ann Swanson also in 2020 this really helped me when it became necessary to go online. In 2020 I began taking my classes onto zoom classes.
